Tip #1 Challenge your assumptions A lot of people think that Self-control and its product, Motivation is a finite resources that wear down over time. But a recent study has proved this to be incorrect. The first thing to do to keep your motivation switched on for longer, is to stop thinking that the power will eventually run out on its own. That, my friend, is entirely due to you. Tip #2 Take breaks Even though this sounds counter-productive, the results of the study showed that when people worked on one particular project for an extended amount of time (over 50 minutes or so) their attention and competence at a particular task will begin to decline. So taking regular breaks, can actually help you to stay on task for longer and make more progress, which encourages you to do more. Tip #3 Reward yourself People generally have a sense, when they embark on a topic that they are passionate about, that when they start something, they will reach a level much greater than where they are now. But recognising that progress can take a long time. And it can cause people to give up because they think they're not seeing much. So start writing up a list of things you want to accomplish. Start with your long term goals, and then write a separate list of what you want to get done in that week, and even shorter that day. When you've done something - cross it off your list, and when you get to the end of the week, reward yourself, with a movie, or a meal out or just a few hours to yourself. Slowly, you'll begin to see your tasks whittle down, till you're on the precipice of reaching your long term goals. Not only will this remind you of why you're working so hard on this, and what exactly you're working towards, you'll also be giving yourself some short term gratification to keep you more keen at working for the long-haul. "Happiness makes up for in height what it lacks in length." - Robert Frost. This was one of the quotes that I read that really made me sit back and reevaluate the way I perceived life. And I realised, that I was looking at it in entirely the wrong way. Many times, people often discount the moments that they are genuinely happy because they don't last long enough, or they are so few and far between that they may as well not exist. Well, this is an extremely dangerous way of looking at life. And the truth can be said for motivation. There isn't always going to be a constant spark within you that allows you to fulfil all your life goals in week. It will come and it will go, and the first thing to remember, when you're feeling low and sitting on your bedroom floor feeling sorry for yourself, is that this is only the down period, and soon, your motivation will kick in again.
Still, hopefully these tips help reduce those moments, so that you go from getting them everyday to every week, to every month, and so on till you manage to sail through those moments with a lot less stress than you ever thought imaginable. Harley
